First blog!!

Hello everyone!!

Thanks for the great class yesterday. It was so great to see you all again, cleaned up after the retreat!

For our first official blog/reflection please describe below (you can use the comment button) what you believe makes up a community. Is community important? Why or why not? And talk about what communities YOU belong to (church, neighborhood, culture, price, etc.).

Don't forget to make a list of your monthly income and your routine expenses for class next week. If you have any financial goals (in one year, in 5 years, 10 years, etc.) write those down as well.

See you next Wed...be early!

  1. I believe what makes up a community is a group of people that believe in the same thing. For example, us the Price Scholars believe in education, I mean that's why we are in school and are so dedicated. In my opinion, I think a community is important because we will always need from someone else. Yes I do believe it is okay to be independent but even if you are independent you still need from someone else. I do not mind asking for help because I know there are some things I am not good at that others are. For example, I am not very good at revising my work so I usually ask my friend Ashley or a tutor in the English center for help because they are better at that than I am. I belong to several communities. There is my church community but even in that community it turns into smaller communities like the lectors, the youth club, the women that serve in the retreats and ,many more. I obviously have my price family as well and well the college community. Overall, I just want to say that communities play a big part of my life and I like joining communities because I know that I will need help and there are many individuals who can help me when I am not good at certain things.

    2. I think a group of people with common ideas or thoughts make up a community. Because in order to have a community you need people and a purpose. I do. Yes a community is very important because it helps people that feel alone and sad happy. For instance I belong to Price before I got here I felt like I had no purpose and I couldn't trust anyone. I still struggle with its but with my Price family I can and will overcome.

A community are groups of individuals who strive for the similar things I believe communities are extremely important because that's what makes up the world and that's the beauty of the diverse cultures ! Just like the Price scholarship that I was fortunate to be in. This community strives for education and success. We need more us to better the world !

  3. I believe a community is either those who are together by circumstance or by choice. For example, a small group of neighbors could be a community. However, so could a group of people who come together for common cause and organize meetings. Some might argue that community is important because they might provide moral support and understanding. Others might say they're not because there's no need for such support or group involvement. I belong to a couple communities, primarily my Price family as well as my local Boys and Girls club where I used to volunteer.

  4. I believe that a community is group of people stick together and have the same struggle with different stories. In my opinion community is important, because as a group share different stories but same problems we could learn lessons from each others. Also a community need a leader that knows how to lead people to overcome their fears! Yes I know that every voice matter but once we start build a community we become leaders. Mostly i belong to my price community because we share the same problems or somehow related to each other . Also we learn from each other as we communicate with each other. some might be individual but at one point in life we need each others support. :)

  5. What I believe that makes up a community is trust. If there's not trust then nobody can open up too. Trust helps people to open and eventually we notice that their is someone like us out there, that we are not alone.I believe that community is important because from personal experience is tough to be alone and not having someone to talk too.For my community is MESA program and Price, I had the opportunity to know amazing people and I am looking forward for them to be part of my future.

  8. I guess my original comment didn't post, sorry for the inconvenience. So where do I start? Community to me means a group of people that are working towards a similar goal or direction. I am a part of the MESA program as well as Price Scholarship Program and both of these communities are helping me strive towards success. It helps empower me to have the freedom to take control of my education. Specifically Price is giving me a platform to grow and give back, help, and inspire the same greatness that motivates my self. I am apart of a ministry called Epic Encounter, and the community is made of people seeking the truth and that want to become the person they were created to be. Even though these communities are different locations, and people one thing remains is the common goal to not only better your self but to give back to others.

  9. I believe that a community is a group of individuals who share a common value, goal, or lifestyle. A healthy community can exist in three different levels. There can be people who are further along in their goals or personal realization who can help boost you up along with them, people who are at your same level who can connect with you and provide the idea of "being in this together", as well as people who have barely started their path who can give you the opportunity to have your skills valued and develop leadership characteristics. These communities tied with a critical pedagogy are ideal in the sense that they promote the idea that knowledge(not just school-wise) promotes power and strength as well as consciousness of freedom which is the ultimate capstone of wisdom. I truly believe that without a community, it is very difficult to become a self-actualized being.Similarly, they are exceedingly important because as social beings we constantly feel the need for a sense of togetherness and understanding. I am lucky enough to belong to several communities of this sort. I am currently in the MESA program, the Price Scholars Program, the Society of Women Engineers, and the First Year Experience Program. These communities have allowed me to develop many symbiotic relationships with my peers and have provided key opportunities for my personal development. Similarly, they have placed very important people in my path whom I feel truly understand where I am coming from and the struggles I face to get to where I am going. They have given me confidence, satisfaction, and pride for those around me. I genuinely believe that if it was not for my communities, I would not be who I am today.

  10. In my opinion, community is based on the honest, belief, responsibility and helpful. It is very important because no matter how I am talented, I cannot do anything if I am not in any community. I have been in the Catholic community in a church near my house since I came to the USA. Every week, we meet together in the Church. We all share anything about life, about God. Right now, I am also a member in Price Scholarship family. I made a lot of new friends. We all share so many experiences, skills as well as personal stories. I am very glad to be one of the members in this great family!

  11. Having a solid community of people who you can trust enough to be vulnerable and honest with is a foundational part of life.Everyone needs people who encourage, listen to and cry with them. Community offers several valuable gifts that combine to improve our emotional state. this is very important because you have people who is always there for you good times and bad times.the reason why i think community is important is because I think nowadays in a world which seems to favour the individualist, the importance of being surrounded by a strong community has, in some cultures, dropped in importance and needs to be revived. Being a part of something bigger than yourself is a humbling experience, and brings you up against challenges on a daily basis. Challenges that can help you, and others, to grow in a positive way.

  12. I think a community is a group of people with different interests and who practice different activities, but, who have the same goal for their community. Havin different interest and practicing different activities does not mean they are incomptible to live/be in the same community, it just means that communities are made of different people with different experiences and backgrounds. Which is good, because the community is like a beautiful garden full of different types of flowers. Making the garden rich of different colors and fragances. Also, by being in the same community their main goal or purpose is help one another in their difficulties and to ultimately improve the community in which they reside. The communities I am in are Toussaint, Price, EOPS, Work friends, and Mesa.

  13. I believe a community makes up from a group of people who share common characteristics, values and beliefs. A community also makes up from people who fight to achieve the similar goals such as success in academic path, career, and etc. In the academic field, I see community as a group of people who give up their time to fight hard to success in education and to become a successful in life. In my opinion, I think community is important because human being essentially need a sense of belonging. The sense of belonging is what connect us to many relationships that we can use as our resource to develop our own social skills and to success in life. In addition, the community is where we can find the comfort in difficult situations. I think I am really lucky to be a part of a couple communities such as the MESA program, and the Price program. In these communities, I am given the opportunity to develop my social skill, and to meet with a lot of amazing people. I hope that these communities will be part of my future.

  14. I believe community is very important because it gives courage, hope, options, and Joy. Most importantly its sharing the air and trusting each others faith. I believe we all experience different things and go through different storm in our lives. “Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their labor: If either of them falls down, one can help the other up. But pity anyone who falls and has no one to help them up. Also, if two lie down together, they will keep warm. But how can one keep warm alone? Though one may be overpowered, two can defend themselves. A cord of three strands is not quickly broken” Ecclesiastes 4:9-12. This is why it is important to have community like Price Family. We can learn so much from each other through different experience, knowledge, and wisdom. Also in community it really is important to have communication. Through communication, we can build a stronger relationship. But both to be good on dependent and independent based on the situation. The community that I belong to is a Church. I called it as one big family just like Price. We stand in unity with courage and trusting each other. Building our relationship together through spiritual and physical.

  17. What I believe makes up a community is a set of different individuals that creates a belief system, acknowledges each others differences, and supports each others no matter how different our goals may be. I believe this because in high school I was apart of Cardinals Interact that ultimately helped me understand the value of being apart of a community as well as helping my community. I live by the Rotary’s motto which is, “Service above self,” because what it really comes down to is how much you give back to your community without having the intention of receiving something back. There is nothing more powerful than a group of individuals that strive to achieve more of life and knowing that there are people behind you to support you along the way. Having a community is important because there is unity in a group that is able to help one another out. It really is important because it would be impossible to make a change with one person if they have no one that follows them.

  18. Community is a great place for everyone to settle for peace. Community should growth in the truth and be the light for each other to have hope in the future. Faithful, honest, kind, care, and purity are the main reason where community growth because when the rout of the government is very strong in faithful, honest, kind, and care for the community, then the community will growth in such a peace and freedom. Community is always will growth no matter what when there is a purity because there are evil when purity is not there. For example, many church are growth in the truth and purity and the place is growth with faithful, love, and kind. But to compare it with a place where there are casino, it fill with full of evil such as sex, rape, violent, and etc… But nobody want a curse in their life or mystery of being a rape or have sex with someone they will never be together in their life time. No body does not want to lose their family member or love one who is very innocent but have kill by a drug man. No body want to live in such a place where the evil live because it will only bring sadness. In deep I believe in faithful, honest, kind, care, and purity in the community which bring happiness.

  19. A community is based upon and made up a small or an abundant group of with an organized structure. To where everyone in the community can rely, trust, and believe in everyone who makes up that community. Having community is highly important, so if anything happened and if things need to be worked on and improved, everyone can come together and solve the problem and fix anything that needs to be fixed. Supposed to if everyone was individual everyone wouldn't be close to one another and everything will just be secluded. Besides the community of the price scholars I am also apart of a church community and communities with other friends. At church it's good to have community because everyone can have an input and things can go smoothly. I help in the children church at work and if the kids need something all the other departments can come together and rationally figure out what the next step can be.

  21. Being part of a community is vital to the success of every college student. It is important to find a place of support, specially for those who don't receive any support from family or are first generation. Everyone needs to feel like they belong. Being part of Price motivates me to do well so I can make myself proud and those around me. Every one of us wants to see each other succeed. Sometimes in life we need people to relate to. Many of us are first generation students and are going into college basically blindfolded. We are still trying to navigate this wonderful new world that is college. This is not just a learning community, it's a family as well.
